2016 Racing Results

Sunday 25th. September, 2016 9 miles GA9/2 ANNUAL INTERCLUB (Hosted By Viking Velo )

Weather 16c, wind moderate 14 mph WSW.

The annual interclub event between Viking Velo, Phoenix cc, Trent Valley Road Club & Gainsborough Aegir.

Thankfully the early morning rain had cleared through and the roads were largely dry by the time the race started. A good turn out of 33 riders made the start up. The wind was at times helpful, but just had enough west on it, to make some sections more difficult and tricky.

A fantastic result for the club, with us winning both the scratch and the handicap competitions !!.

SCRATCH RESULTS

1st Viking Velo (Lewin, Parker, Skelly) 61 mins 36 secs

2nd Trent Valley 67 mins 27 secs

3rd Phoenix cc 74 mins 39 secs

4th Gainsborough Aegir – Unable to field full team, no time given.

HANDICAP RESULTS

1st Viking Velo + 11 mins 36 secs faster than handicap.

2nd Trent Valley + 11 mins 29 secs faster than handicap.

3rd Phoenix cc +9 mins 19 secs faster than handicap.

4th Gainsborough Aegir – unable to field full team, no time given.

So well done to all the riders, thanks for turning out in force to represent our club.

Tuesday 6 th. September 2016. 5.3 miles TV5/2 (Hosted by Viking Velo)

Weather = very pleasant, little wind.

The final Tueday TT for 2016, and winter follows hard on the wheel of the last rider to cross the line. Andy Lewin finishes the series where he started…in first place….top rider, top bloke…well done that man. Only that pesky Mr Codd from Trent Valley managed to get in the way of what was nearly a Viking Velo clean sweep !!. Don’t forget folks, the interclub on Sunday 25th September.

Tuesday 16th. August, 2016. 8.3 miles GA8/1 ( Hosted By Viking Velo )

Weather, dry, warm 21c, wind light/mod 12 mph ESE

A very pleasant evening but a niggly east wind with a tad of southerly on it, made this a testing event along the Trent bank and coming home up Carr Lane.

Great times from Ian Barley, Tony Keightley . A very special mention of the fantastic time posted by veteran rider Ian Ferraby & Mechele Barley getting within 11 secs of seasoned duathelete Ruth Wilson.

Tuesday 26th. July, 2016. 5.5 miles TV5/2 (Hosted by Viking Velo )

Weather – dry, warm 21c, wind light SW 5 mph.

A very pleasant evening for a bike race, not too hot or cold and just a light SW wind.

Andy Lewin, still carrying the effects of a Summer cold, managed to just see off the persistent challenge of the two Trent Valley lads and took this one with a good winning time of 12.53 for the extended(5.5) 5 mile event on TV5/2.

Just behind the two TVRC riders, came a solid wave of Viking riders, with Phil Burton leading the charge with Matt, Ray, Ian & Tony all in close contention and all putting in solid efforts.

Highlight of the night for me(marshalling), came when stood near the finish, when the two timekeeping ladies, on trying to identify a rider fast approaching the line, incorrectly called it as ” Carol ” and not the true identity, which was in fact our very own Matt “Diesel” Fieldson !!. Quality !!.

SUNDAY 10TH. JULY, 2016. 9 MILES GA9/2

Event cancelled due to standing water between Susworth & East Butterwick.

But the BBQ still went ahead, ironically in warm sunshine !!.

TUESDAY 5TH. JULY, 2016. 10 MILES GA10/1 (HOSTED BY VIKING VELO )

Weather, dry, warm 21c, wind moderate 15mph WNW.

Much better weather, saw plenty out for this 10 mile event. The wind was very evident, but with just a hint of north in it, riders were not too inconvenienced by it down the Trent bank.

Andy Lewin held up the Viking Velo end of affairs, proving just too strong for the Trent Valley pairing of Codd & Walker. Great rides from Ray Herbert, Diesel Fieldson, Phil Burton & Ian Barley. Our Ron for the road, confirmed the reason why I won’t let him on the back of my Tandem!!.

However, visiting JLT Condor youth rider Max Williamson proved too good for all, winning the event and proving why he has caught the eye of the pro teams. Best of luck to the young lad.

Weather dry, pleasant 16c, wind light 8mph NNE.

Yet again, the wind was from the north, although only light and on this course a northerly wind is a hinderance.  Protection in the woods helped the riders post some very good times. Fortunately the weather stayed dry for our BBQ afterwards.

Weather dry, cool 14c, wind moderate 15 mph North.

A cool breezy evening, but staying dry. The moderate North wind helped the riders along the Trent bank, with the hindrance travelling North being mitigated by the trees. This allowed the riders to post some very good times.

Both the 25 & 17 mile races were won by riders from other clubs, though our lads showed very solid form in the 25 mile event behind Trent Valleys front two, the sibling Gale rivalry was as close as ever. Ray Herbert rode a great race over 17 miles and recorded a very fine 43.11.

Very nice to see the ” old fella ” winning the 8 mile event and a very good time posted by Tim Smithson in his very first time trial

Weather – wet, cold and miserable. Wind moderate 15 mph NNE

A very low turnout for this one, following a day of constant rain. Some decent times for the few who braved the elements, with the wind being in the north, enabling some fast speeds along the Trent bank. Andy Codd was the winner on the night, being chased home by Matt Fieldson, who continues to improve. The Gale twins once again were locked in a titanic sibling battle, separated by just 4 secs!.

Tuesday 3rd May, 2016. 5 miles GA5/1 ( Hosted by Viking Velo )

Weather – Dry, 9c, wind light 8mph Westerly.

A very pleasant spring evening for this 5 mile event starting in Marton. This is the first time we have raced over this course/distance as a club and there were some fast times recorded all round. The westerly breeze dropped off during the evening and whilst the wind gave the riders no help in either direction, at least it had decreased to just a light wind by the time the riders set off.

The fastest rider on the night, was Viking Velo’s Andy Lewin. Andy continued in fine form and posted a very rapid 11 mins 14 secs to take the event from Lincsquad’s rapidly improving young rider Aiden Grocock, (name for the future?), Aiden posting a superb 11 min 27 secs. Third place was Trent Valley rider Andy Codd with 11 min 40 secs.

Joe Nash made  his seasonal reappearance and somehow managed to power yours truly around on the Beer Engine Tandem to post a very encouraging time of 12 min 12 secs ( Our Ron For The Road, please take note and get back on the bike).

Phil Burton, Tony Keightley & Chris Gale all put in solid efforts, Matt ( Diesel ) Fieldson found this short track not suited to the big mans strengths.

Two new members, Rich Hunt & Jamie Olivant showed plenty of ability in their first rides for the club.

Tuesday 19th April, 2016. 10 miles GA10/1 ( Hosted by Trent Valley Road Club

Weather – Dry 12c, wind light increasing to moderate during the event, 15 mph Easterly.

Very pleasant spring sunshine for this 2 up event, though the gentle easterly wind that graced the riders at signing on, suddenly increased in strength as the riders left the starting gates. This made the short ride to the Trent from the woods very rapid, but did not do a lot to help heading south along the bankside. The ride east to the finish at the bridge is thankfully short on this track, which was welcome as it was pretty tough into what was now a moderate easterly breeze.

Andy Lewin & Judd Parker were the fastest Viking riders with 23.20, this gave them third place overall, just 6 seconds behind the 2nd place team of Trent Valley. The winner on the night was Lincsquad super athlete Steve Grocock, who managed his superb time of 22.35 all on his own!.

Phil Burton & Matt “Diesel” Fieldson had a quite astonishing ride with a time of 24.48, which is improvement for both lads well off the Richter scale.

Another team that recorded amazing improvement was the Husband & wife pairing of Mechele and Ian Barley with an unbelievable 27.56.

Loads of others, too many to mention all by name also recorded some quite amazing improvements. The times of so many Viking riders continue to improve, we need to drink more beer, this is getting too much like a proper cycling club !!.

Great to see Ian Ferraby back after his accident, and he too recorded a fantastic ride with Chris Gale in 27.16

Final mention goes out to Rob Noble, who despite crashing and coming back looking like a very large roadkill Pheasant, still crossed the line in 26.52….now that’s impressive.

You all continue to astonish me…well done to all.

Race Cancelled- flooding.

Tuesday 5th April, 2016. 10.5 miles TV10/2 ( Hosted by Phoenix Cycling Club )

Weather – dry 12c, wind light 10 mph wsw.

The weather was a bit more pleasant for this one, with just a light westerly wind that had just a hint of south on it. The ride south along the Trent bank was a bit harder than the ride north through the woods.

Andy Lewin came back to more like his form from last year, after suffering a puncture in the previous weeks inaugural event of the year. Julian was once again absent from the starting line up, this is due to the early 6.30 pm starts at this time of the year, which he struggles to get to due to work. The 7 pm start times are more to his liking.

A fantastic turnout from our club, saw 19 riders line up for the start. Phil Burton was our second fastest rider after Andy, grabbing 6th place overall with a nice time of 26.26. Phil was followed closely home by a pack of Vikings including Ray Herbert, Tony Keightley, Matt Fieldson, Rob Noble, Ian Barley & Chris Warrilow. Even the Beer Engine Tandem team managed some sort of respectability this week, so all in all, it was a good night for the club.

As a footnote to the evening’ s racing, some of you may well be aware that on riding home after the event, Ian Ferraby lost control of his bike and had quite a nasty fall onto the road. He spent most of Tuesday night in Scunthorpe General, but is now back home and the good news is that he looks like he will make a full recovery.

This accident highlights the importance of WEARING A HELMET and also making sure that the helmet is FASTENED !.

Both the club and Ian Ferraby would like to offer it’s sincere gratitude to Phoenix members Abbie Mercer & Leanne Beardall who provided superb first aid care for Ian following his fall.

Tuesday 29th March, 2016. 5.6 miles, TV5/2 ( Hosted by Trent Valley Road Club )

Weather – dry early with light westerly wind, then turning increasingly wet, cold and windy(westerly). Those smart people who signed on early, had a significantly more pleasurable experience (is there such a thing in a tt ?).

The first time trial for the new 2016 season was hosted by Trent Valley, over the extended 5 mile Laughton course. Despite the weather forecast, a very good turnout of Gainsborough cyclists braved the predicted deteriorating conditions. The forecasters had this one spot on and it was noted that never before had so many competitors been so eager to sign on, so early !. The weather took a decided turn for the worse half way through the event, with a squall moving in producing gusty winds and heavy rain, making it very unpleasant and difficult for those riders who set off later.

As always with any event, it is difficult to highlight any one individual without offending any one else, but in true Viking style, I will anyway, so sorry if you don’t get a mention, maybe you should buy me a beer and see if that increases your popularity !.

Julian was absent from this event, which is no surprise as he can’t win these shorter races and was last seen sucking something over Scunthorpe way (apparently, at least it’s female !). Andy Lewin turned up right at the death, which was a massive faux par, as by then the weather had turned biblical. To compound his misery, he suffered a puncture and recorded a time slower than Trev. This has to be a low point in the big lads career, but things can only get better!.

” Our Ron ” and yours truly were last seen battling to control a rudderless, powerless kite heading straight towards North Ferraby. To compound their pathetic efforts, they only managed to beat a guy who had a puncture by 2 minutes!!. Enough said.

A fantastic effort from our two new members, with Ray Herbert taking 4th spot and Craig Mcavoy 14th, well done lads and welcome to the club.

The ” Gale twins ” have improved beyond belief, having only just taken up serious cycling, though it’s a shame they are so closely matched on times as due to their uncanny similarity, we could have had a right old couple of ravers for the interclub, no one could have told them apart!!.

New member Tony Keightley has found his new surroundings to his liking and he produced a fantastic effort along with last years improvers Ian Barley, Chris Warrilow and Phil Burton.

Special mention for Ian ” Fatha ” Ferraby who has come back to racing at the grand old age of 103…incredible. If only that Tractor had not got in his way?!.

Well that’s that folks…onwards to the next one….stay strong.
