2015 Racing Results.

SUNDAY 20th DECEMBER, 2015. 9 MILES GA9/2 THE UPTON FISH SHOP FUR & FEATHER TROPHY RACE

Weather dry, sunny, mild 12 c , wind fresh 17 mph, SW.

Our final race for 2015 and the weather was once again most kind, mild, sunny and a nice south westerly breeze to help the riders down to East Butterwick and enabling some quick times. This race had a different format to most others, being a handicap race and hence enabling everyone in theory, to hold a chance of winning.

Fastest rider on the day ( handicap ) was new member Paul Bagshaw who romped away with the event, posting an adjusted time of 17 mins 33 secs. No doubt the handicapper will be taking a very dim view of this enhanced form and Paul will be finding life in handicap company a little more testing in 2016 !.

Second place went to the ever improving Matt ( Diesel ) Fieldson. Matt once again improved ahead of the handicapper and recorded an adjusted time of 18 mins 55 secs.

Third place went to yet another who has improved all year, with Ian Barley posting an adjusted time of 19 mins .02 secs.

Following the race, we enjoyed Pie, Peas & a pint(some enjoyed more of one than the other and some enjoyed more of all three !!) and the prize awards saw everyone who took part ( not including the Beer Engine Tandem team) receive a prize.

So that’s all folks for 2015….thanks for everything to everyone who has contributed during the year….YOU KNOW WHO YOU ALL ARE !.

Merry Christmas and a healthy new year to everyone…..Stay Strong.

SUNDAY 15TH NOVEMBER 2015. 9 MILES GA9/2

Weather – dry, mild 16c, wind fresh 17mph wsw.

The second of our monthly 9 mile events down to East Butterwick and a break in the awful weather of the previous 24 hours allowed this event to take place after some last minute course risk assessment. The weather during the event was actually quite pleasant, it was very mild and largely dry. The wind was pretty strong mainly westerly, but it had just a bit of south on it, to mostly help the riders, though the section heading west to Susworth was hard(thankfully less than a mile). Winner on the day was Matt ( Diesel ) Fieldson with 23.07, underlining just how much improvement Matt has made since taking up cycling with us just two years ago. Second place went to another rider who has not stopped improving all year, Ian Barley. Ian was just pipped on the post by a mere 6 seconds, recording a super time of 23.13. Third place went to Chris Warrilow with 24.19, Mr consistent maintaining his run of excellent efforts. Many thanks to Viking Member Max Rackcliffe for providing both the burgers & the buns which were quite delicious.

SUNDAY 11TH OCTOBER 2015. 9 MILES GA9/2

Weather – dry, cool, 12c, wind light-moderate North easterly

The first of our Autumn monthly 9 mile events down to East Butterwick and the weather proved kind as it was a beautiful day for October, albeit the wind from the north made it a bit harder than recent races on this track. The winner on the day was Jud Parker who beat new member and only recent tt convert Richard Shaw by 45 secs to record a very decent effort with a winners time of 23.39. Just behind the 2nd placed rider, came vastly improved rider Matt (Diesel ) Fieldson who was just beaten for 2nd spot by 2 secs. Special mention goes to Andy Lewin’s two kids who rode down to the finish accompanied by Andy & Julian, once all the race riders had gone. The result of this dual is that David Lewin did the course in 38.24 beating the time of his sister Ruby Lewin who recorded 39.01….pretty close !.

SUNDAY 27TH SEPTEMBER 2015. 9 MILES GA9/2 INTERCLUB EVENT HOSTED BY VIKING VELO

Weather – dry, misty, cool 12c, wind very light se, 3mph.

The annual inter-club competition took place over 9 miles, with riders from all four Gainsborough clubs being represented. However only two teams ( Trent Valley & Viking Velo) managed to field enough riders to compete in both the scratch race & the handicap race. Phoenix cc managed to get the 3 riders needed for a handicap team but declined, due to lack of riders, to enter the scratch team race. Aegir sadly had only 2 riders so their team results did not count to either comp. The weather was a bit on the cool side and the mist was slow to clear but with no wind, it was a nice morning for cycling and after the race, the sun came out for a lovely BBQ.

Viking Velo had the first two home in the shape of club fast men Julian Hesp & Andy Lewin, with only the minimum margin of one second separating the two riders at the finish. Unfortunately three of the club’s contenders for the 3 rd scratch team place ( Jud Parker,Phil Burton & Joe Nash ) were unable to make the starting line up, meaning that the pressure to perform fell upon the likes of Matt Fieldson, Ian Barley & Rob Noble. Despite the improvement made all year by these  lads, they were just unable to bridge the gap needed and Trent Valley won the scratch competition with a combined team time of 65 mins 54 secs, against a Viking Velo team time of 66 mins 10 secs meaning that we were beaten on the day by just an agonising 16 secs !!. That’s roughly a second per pint consumed by ” Our Ron for the road ” at the previous evenings party he had attended….and he performed accordingly !.

A special mention must be made about new member Richard Shaw ( Sally,s brother ) who competed in his very first ever time trial and recorded a superb time of 24.36 riding a normal road bike with no clip on bars or fancy wheels/aero clothing etc.

The handicap comp proved to be an opposite with Viking Velo easily winning this event beating Trent Valley into 2nd place , with Phoenix taking the third slot.

So on the day, not a bad performance and the clubs riders have made massive progress this season.

A night which only the brave endured, heavy rain made this event not at all pleasant. There were only a few Viking riders who made the start with Phil Burton coming out best of those that rode, recording a very admirable time of 15.11. With the dynamic duo of Lewin & Hesp both absent, the coast was clear for Trent Valley and they duly grabbed their opportunity, filling all of the first five places. With only 3 more combined club Tuesday events to go, our 100% record of having a winning Viking rider lay in ruins. So too are the prospects of either Lewin or Hesp winning ” Clubman ” of the year !!.

Tuesday 11th August, 2015. 15 miles (or 8 miles ).

Weather- dry, warm, 21c. Wind virtually nil, variable.

A perfect summer evening with virtually no wind and dry and warm conditions. As such, it was set up for some fast times and so it proved with pb’s a plenty. The winner was Julian with a fantastic time of 33.16 for the 15 miles. This broke the old track record held by Lincoln’s Andy Broxholme. Other notable performances were recorded by Ian Barley (38.59), Matt Fieldson (39.15 ) & Mechele Barley ( 42.37 ).

The ” 2 up ” event saw Viking Velo maintain their 100 % win record in the 2015 combined clubs tt series. The club’s dynamic duo of Hesp & Lewin continued in irrepressible form winning by over a minute from their Trent Valley rivals Codd & Brownless. The moderate/fresh westerly wind made this a hard ride. The pairing of Burton & Fieldson catches the eye and underlines the rapid improvement both lads have made this year. Great to see Ian Ferraby back on a bike after a long time recovering from a serious fall , riding a solid comeback race with another long time absentee Simon ” Lovejoy “. Well done to new member Max Rackliff who competed in his very first time trial and to Roy Watson who won the ” Billy No Mates ” trophy race !!. Now for the interclub next week…see news update page.

Right…we are back up and running with a full results service…sorry for the lapse and sorry for the abbreviated results service between 9th June and today. Ian Barley has sorted out the way to get the above on the site, a full results list, rather than just our own times. A big Whooppee to him, i can get my life back now !!.

Our Sunday BBQ race was won in fine style by Phil Burton. This was Phil’s first ever tt victory and he did it with a very smart time of 21.57. The weather conditions were perfect for a fast race, with dry roads and a nice helpful south easterly breeze. Sadly the weather then turned very wet for the post race BBQ but we still tried to enjoy it and most found the Pub to be the place to be.

The 2nd -6th places were very tight indeed and there were some excellent performances from these lads and Mechele represented the fairer sex with her best ever time for this track. Thanks to the race officials as always, without them we would not be able to hold any events. Thanks also to Phoenix cc members, who supported this event in numbers, you were most welcome.

As always a very enjoyable afternoon, despite the rain !!.

Another good turn out from the Vikings on what was once again a very difficult evening weather wise. A strong wsw wind only slowly moderated during the evening, meaning that this was a very tough ride up the Trent Bank. A big well done to all riders, that can’t have been easy ( it nearly blew my ciggie out in the smoking shelter at the Black Horse lol ). Once again the Viking duo of Andy & Julian did the club proud, taking first and second places and seeing off the opposition from the other clubs. A massive well done to the clubs bigger lads( you know who you are ! ), having to ride into that howler along the ” Bank Of Suffering “, must have been hellish. To think we do this for Pleasure ! # sick.

The weather played a key role in this one, with a light/moderate sw wind helping the riders, especially over the last two miles between Susworth and East Butterwick. Andy Lewin smashed the track record with a superb 19.18, but he was kept up to his work by Julian Hesp who also smashed the record and finished an agonizing 1 second behind !!. Third place went to the much improving Judd Parker with a great 21.30. The Beer Engine Tandem team found the conditions in their favour and posted a pleasing performance, ” our Ron ” putting his pathetic attempt last week behind him.

There were many other good times recorded by all riders, with perhaps Mechele being the most chuffed, knocking two mins off her previous best. Nice to see Ian Ferraby doing his first tt of 2015 after a long spell out the saddle due to illness and a great first ever tt ride by Matts Mrs, Rosi. The BBQ afterwards was of course the highlight of the day for some, the weather remained fine and dry though the increasing wind from the south, must have made the ride back home, a bit testing. Good Fun all round.

Possibly the worst conditions weather wise in a very long time, made this 15 mile event an absolute ” Grueller “. The strong south wind made the long haul up the Trent bank from Susworth to Morton incredibly hard and some of our big old Viking boys were not seen at their best in these extreme conditions. Steve Grocock of Lincsquad once again just managed to pip our Andy Lewin by 7 secs, recording a fantastic time in the circumstances of 37.17 to Andy’s brave effort of 37.24. Julian Hesp held off the rest to finish third with another great time considering, of 38.19. The Viking lads were then very much ” out the back” in the finishing order, but this event is best consigned to the bin given the horrendous weather riders had to endure. On-wards and hopefully…up-wards !.

Andy Clarke & Arran Watson (Tandem) 8.3 miles, 23.38

This 15 mile event was conducted on a dry but cool evening, with a moderate West South West wind making the long haul south along the Trent bank hard work. The wind eased during the evening, meaning that the riders setting off towards the back of the race, were seen to some advantage over those starting nearer the front (please note Arran & Andy C, went off rider number one !!).

A titanic battle at the head of affairs saw Viking Velo’s Andy Lewin just touched off first place by Lincsquad’s Steve Grocock by just 7 seconds. The winner recording a superb 34.02 over Andy’s 34.09. Third place went to another Viking Man, Julian Hesp with a fine effort of 34.55.

As ever with one of these club race reports, apart from the obvious candidates who finished at the head of affairs, it is very difficult to pick out other Viking Men and chicks, for special mention. However a few of note include much improved efforts from Judd Parker (40.45), Phil Burton (40.56 ) and continuing his mercurial rise up the ranks, Rob Noble (41.19 ). The endearing image of the evening, has to be the grimacing contorted face of Roy Watson. Roy started a minute behind his “boss” at work, Phoenix man Kev Smart and pulled that minute back to produce a manic charge to the line. The pair were inseparable as they took the chequered flag, Roy beating his boss by exactly a minute!.

We also welcomed two new members to our Longship, both riding with great promise with Chris Redhead doing 43.06 and Tony Marshall 44.54.

C.Williams & R.Williams Trent Valley –  OFF COURSE.

Another good turnout for the third combined clubs tt, this one being hosted by Trent Valley on the bang 10 mile GA10/1 course. The weather was nigh on perfect for cycling with a gentle East wind that just had a hint of northerly on it, providing a little help down the Trent bank, but with only a short run into the wind towards the finish at the bridge. Superb ride from the clubs two fast lads to win the event in a super rapid 22.06. There were a host of very credible rides from Viking men including Steve Dobson with a 23.56 riding with Calum Lawson of Andy Moore RT, Rob Noble & Judd Parker did a great time with 25.13 and Matt & Phil posting an impressive 26.49. The Viking Velo Beer Engine put last weeks pathetic effort well behind them and rumour has it, that ” Our Ron ” might soon be able to once again fit into his cycling jersey and ditch that Poncho and kids cycling helmet !. Well done to all, we featured strongly in the overall results.

The second of the Gainsborough combined clubs tt was run on a fine evening over the extended 10 mile circuit GA10/3 which is 10.3 miles in total. The light but nagging ssw wind made the long ride up the Trent bank a ” toughie “, although the return north past the wood yard, up the tunnel of ” pain ” was easier due to the wind direction. Andy Lewin won “our” event with an epic time in the conditions of 23.47. This time proved good enough to see off all but one of the 45 bikes that took part. Second place went to the vastly improved Rob Noble, who after spending a winter training hard, is now putting in some fantastic performances and it has to be said, more is still to come!.Third was the Viking Velo Beer engine tandem who after spending a hard winter training in both the Black Horse & latterly, The Elm Cottage, found this one about 9.3 miles too far!. Matt Fieldson is over his back problems and proved this with one of his best ever performances in 4th position. Great rides from Ian & Chris and special mentions for Roy, who would have been 10 mins slower than this a year ago. Nice to see one of our new members John Gale showing great resolve and promise for better to come with a 33.57. Poor Julian punctured half way round and rode back in the ” Broomy “.
